How Does Your Garden Grow?

Since I've just moved into my new place, I haven't had time to devote to a garden....so I have chosen an easy alternative...but one that is most useful!
I chose to focus on a few herbs and some pepper plants this year, and I'm doing so with a "container garden".  I'm sorry to say my pepper plants (that I have always had great success with) aren't doing so well at producing.  The plants themselves are healthy and growing, but they just won't produce!  However, my herbs are really thriving, and I've enjoyed using them in some favorite dishes this summer!

I haven't used the greek oregano yet but it sure is developing nicely!  I've got to find some recipes for it so any that you have (other than spaghetti sauce) is most welcome.

*SWEET BASIL*
Sweet basil is one of my all time favorite herbs!!!
When you harvest it, pick from the top and sides of the plant, not the bottom.
When you chop basil, stack leaves and roll from outside in to make a "cigar shape" and chop.

One of my favorites to make is Caprese Salad!
YUM!

It works well in spaghetti sauce and on pizza.
It's really delish in pizza pasta salad!
Here's the recipe if you'd like to make it!

*ROSEMARY*
Choose fresh rosemary by color:  gray-green color and not yellowish...
There shouldn't be any blackened or mushiness on the leaves or stem...
It should smell sharp, spicy, and clean...

Just clip the sprigs with some shears.  The needles shouldn't fall off.

First, I can't begin to tell you how wonderfully fragrant this is in my garden!
Ok, so....Rosemary works well in poultry and fish dishes, as well as, in salads, pastas, and bread!  I really enjoyed using it in my roast and veggies that I wrote about here.  So, if you don't have space for a full garden, and you enjoy herbs, I would definitely recommend going this route.  It makes for a nice outdoor display as well!

I look forward to adding more herbs next year when I have more time to get them started.
I really hope there is something here that helps you with an herb container garden and/or using herbs.

  1. Container gardens can really be rewarding as they are much less work and pure enjoyment. Loving what you have planted. I'm sorry to hear about your peppers not producing. Are they getting 6 hours of sun? Those are definitely sun loving veggies. I know I had a couple of years where they didn't produce until July or August sometimes and no explanation why. But once they did, they didn't disappoint, so I am hopeful for ya!

  2. I am growing my herbs in containers right now, because this house that I am trying to sell, does not allow veggie gardens...I love your herb choices and the pizza pasta sounds great! Thanks for popping in to visit me!

  8. I like your thinking! Tomatoes and a few herbs really are the most important this time of year. You can give me a tomato sandwich any day of the week.

So glad you joined Thoughts of Home on Thursday. :)

  12. Rosemary is such a pretty plant, not even for cooking reasons. Will it grow more full?
